Is There Hormone Replacement Therapy for Men?

Hormone replacement therapy for men is a bit of a misnomer. Why? It is normal for men’s testosterone levels to decrease with age and hormone therapy replaces anything that is naturally missing. Men over the age of 45 are the most likely to experience lower levels of testosterone (or low-t). Despite age, some men experience unnaturally low levels of testosterone; this could be due to testicle dysfunction. These men, in particular, often benefit from hormone therapy.

Why do men need testosterone?

Testosterone levels affect everything in the male body from the reproductive system and sexuality to strength and bone density. If a man has abnormally Low Testosterone, he may experience depression, fatigue, insomnia, hot flashes, increased body fat and decreased muscle mass.

Types of hormone replacement therapy for men

For men with low-t, there are several options available, including:

  • Intramuscular testosterone injections
Every two or three weeks, testosterone injections are injected into the muscles of your buttocks at a doctor’s office or clinic. This allows the medication to be quickly absorbed into the bloodstream.
  • Testosterone patches
This medication is typically used for men who are unable to produce enough testosterone (e.g., hypogonadism). It helps the body develop and maintain specifically male characteristics like a deeper voice and body hair. Daily testosterone patches are applied to the back, arms, buttocks, or abdomen. For this therapy, it is important to rotate application sites.
  • Topical testosterone gel
Topical testosterone gel is also used in the treatment of hypogonadism, which is a failure of the testes to function properly. This medication is typically a daily application to your shoulders, arms, or abdomen.
